What general oral care should be used following surgery?

It is important that you follow all post-op instructions provided for you by our dentists and team. Following these instructions helps you heal, recover and achieve the best possible result from your procedure. We typically recommend that you:

  • Do not rinse or spit for 24 hours following surgery
  • Avoid touching the surgical site with your fingers and tongue.
  • Use ice packs regularly to manage pain and swelling.
  • After 24 hours, use a damp, heated cloth on the area.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed to avoid discomfort.
  • Use any prescribed medications or antibiotics as directed.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Maintain a “soft” diet of foods that are easy to chew and swallow.

What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery is a field of dental care that provides surgical treatments to restore your oral health and function. It is typically recommended when more conservative treatment options cannot fully restore or improve the function, health and appearance of your smile and surrounding oral structures. Common oral surgery procedures include:

  • Tooth extractions
  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Jaw surgery
  • Bone grafting

Please contact our office for more information or to schedule a consultation.
